EarthBalls are fabricated from durable PVC material, much like a high quality beach ball. Giant Premium EarthBalls are printed on woven polyester fabric, with an airtight PVC inner layer. The materials are generally non-toxic and perfectly safe to play with.
Earthballs are made of vinyl, like a high-quality beachball. The silkscreen ink used on the outside of each globe is totally non-toxic, and we’d be happy to send you the Certification of Compliance if you care to see it.
First, we composite NASA satellite imagery into a flat world map. We then cartographically transform this map into several (usually 6 or 12) football-shaped panels, or “gores.” The material is then digitally printed, cut and sewn into a multi-panel globe that is inflated into a perfect sphere.
The satellite image printed onto each EarthBall is massive! Every square kilometer of the Earth’s surface is made up of one pixel. It is 21,600 x 43,200 pixels in size. We’ve improved upon it over time, and it’s now the most detailed image of the world available!
Orbis globes provide the opportunity for everyone (not just astronauts) to gaze upon our precious world as a whole. On a more practical note, EarthBalls are used as an educational tool, as a beacon in events & fundraisers, as art installations, and just as play toys for kids of all ages.
